In November, 1959 the Western Maryland District of the American Legion, agreed to hold a free summer camp for low income, boys age 9-12 on a trial basis.
The first overnight encampment was held during Summer of 1960. Forty boys attended with an all-volunteer staff for one week at Camp Summit near Emmitsburg, Maryland.
From 1960-1971 various sites were used for encampment; and in 1972 the first 2 week overnight camp was held at our present location.

Activities scheduled for campers include: softball, basketball, volley ball, swimming, fishing, archery, rifle range shooting, hiking, bingo, movies, bon-fires, relay races, and crafts.
Police day with police dogs, helicopter tours military shows, shotgun shooting, fire department personnel and equipment, a day trip to Hershey Park, and an evening trip to watch a Frederick Keys baseball game are also frequently included during encampment.
The last evening of camp parents are invited to Awards Night where they can see their child receive awards for fishing, archery, rifle shooting, and various other activities.

6 Cabins, Bath House, Swimming Pool, Rifle Range, Archery Range, Ball Field, Hiking Trail, George Beard Lake, All Purpose Court, Mess Hall, Outdoor Chapel, Picnic Area Pavilion.

Boys age 9-12 interested in attending our free, 1 week, overnight all volunteer encampment at Camp West Mar are selected from Carroll, Frederick and Washington County, Maryland.
Applicants must be recommended by their school principal, minister, or social agency, complete the camp application packet, have a complete physical, complete the health history form, complete the child care administration medication form if medication is needed during camp, attend a personal interview with camp staff, and bring the supplies listed in the application packet on the first day of camp.
